   You just reminded me of a friend of mine, who died in the late 1990s.  He   
   was originally from London, and moved to the USA in the 1950s.  To   
   Americans, he still seemed to have a strong Cockney accent even after   
   four decades in the USA, but, whenever he traveled back to the UK, people   
   there would remark on how American he sounded.  So, he described himself   
   as having a mid-Atlantic accent.
