   There was a French author, Gerard de Villiers, who wrote a long series of spy   
   novels with the main character Malko Linge, which were about as popular as Ian   
   Fleming/James Bond outside of English-speaking countries.  So you could say   
   that the fictional    
   spy Malko Linge would be the French equivalent of James Bond.   
      
   So if you wanted to call him something like that....
