Speaking of seeing things coming through: I still remember
Hurricane Carol in 1954: when the leading edge of the real
downpour came through Amherst, Mass., it looked like a solid
wall of water marching slowly across our back yard.

And at least in Berkeley it was bloody raw, even when the
temperature wasn’t actually all that low. And we won’t talk
   about the mud flats.

It was the neap tide, when the baga venture out of their
holes to root for sandtatties. The waves whispered
rhythmically over the packed sand: haggisss, haggisss,
   haggisss.
