The interest of these guys in science or learning varies widely. If I put
their interest on a scale of one to ten, it really isn't unusual to meet
professors with an interest level of 2 or an interest level of 9. One with an
   interest of 2 would
probably only see the publication of a book as a career milestone, and,
emotionally, care very little. Probably the only thing he'd care about is
whether some administrator or funding agent notices he wrote a book. The 2 is
   often more successful than
the 9, because his focus is on working the system.
