   believe. Hal and I were in the supermarket yesterday and   
   glancing at the covers of all the scandal magazines kept by the   
   checkout lanes, and quoted Michael Flanders: "They make it up,   
   you know."* I said, "They want to believe they can find out   
   things other people don't know about people they mistakenly
