   Seriously, if you want to write SF, but cannot conjure up your own cast of   
   unique characters, settings, etc., you probably should give up the idea of   
   being an SF writer.   
      
   And someone who is able to do the above will besmirch their reputation as a   
   writer by writing Fan Fiction.   
      
   I honestly think that Fan Fiction should be left up to die-hard fans and to   
   young students who want to be SF writers once they reach adulthood -- perhaps   
   they're in high school or below.  Writing is a craft, not a profession.  And   
   one learns a craft by    
   doing.   
      
   Now, no doubt some who read this and are adults will think "What about adult   
   education?"  Well, if you're an adult and are writing Fan Fiction, it should   
   be because you're a fan.
