   One of the translations of Gilgamesh epic has an introduction where I saw   
   mentioned that there were a number of sets of tablets found of it, and one of   
   them was a variant that's essentially Gilgamesh/Enkidu, though the translator   
   who wrote the intro didn'   
   t call it that.  So I think the concept is older.
