   I'd guess the editor was doing so on behalf of those readers who have a   
   limited tolerance for unknown factors?   
      
   One of my betareaders for Cantata was like that. He couldn't seem to   
   deal with the fact that he didn't know something. When he ran into   
   unfamiliar terminology, instead of going "Hmm, I wonder what that is?   
   Maybe we'll find out later." He apparently went "What? Hunh? I'm so   
   confused!"
