   I guess I can sympathize with wanting to know what is "usual".   
      
   For what it's worth I think that Sarah Hoyt has said that when she was   
   concentrating on short fiction she had at least 100 stories out circulating at   
   once.  Granted, I'm going from memory here but I'm pretty certain that I've   
   got that right.   
      
   I haven't been submitting anything for a long time but the records I have show   
   a couple of months, usually, and Apr to August for one magazine to send a   
   rejection.
