Also, "Steal this Book" may be memorable in       > its way, but the effect on sales might not be desirable.              It wasn't but not, quite, for the reason people expect. A book stolen is a       book sold, from the PoV of the distributor, if any, the publisher and the       author. If the bookstore does not return the book (or the stripped cover) it       swallows the loss.               So the title would not have hurt sales if the bookstores had just put the book       out there like other books and everyone did at first. After a fairly short       time, some bookstores started putting the book where the staff could protect       it from theft more        easily. Since that made it less accessible to both buyers and thieves it may       have hurt sales.              --        Will in New Haven              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
