Van Gelder gave me a couple personal ones, and the new guy they have
now...I've never submitted to the others you like.

Once afternoon I got one of Van Gelder's letters, and I crumpled it
into a ball into the pocket of my jacket. Then, a little later, I was
in the gogo bar near my home. This was perhaps 15 years ago, and there
was a Russian woman I drank with there because she made me laugh. I
took out the letter and said, "Maybe _you_ wanna read this," because I
was feelin' grumpy. Her lips moved some while she read English.

After that, whenever she saw me walk into a bar, she'd point at me and
   shout, "Alas!"
