   I have a related question about a situation that I've heard of, but   
   never personally experienced.   
      
   Magazine editors can send you an email that says they're "holding" your   
   submission.  I think this is sort of a half-promise that means We don't   
   really love your ms. enough to feature it, but if we have some space   
   left over in the magazine sometime in the next year, we might use it.
