Had one end on me suddenly once - I was serializing a sort of travelogue
written as I went along, with the idea of introducing the mileau to the
rest of a fiction APA I was involved in. Alas, writing as I went along
meant finding stuff out I should probably have planned for but hadn't
thought of until they (competely logically) happened. So the character
I had planned to provide the dramatic conclusion got the bit between his
teeth and went off early, ending the story three worlds before I
intended it to. So I had to do boring "this is what here" articles for
   them. Oh well...
