   As I recall reading, if one claims the Magellan expedition as the   
   first circumnavigation, the honors as "leader" for the whole trip   
   go to his First Mate.   
      
   On the onther hand, I don't know if anyone disputes Joshua Slocum   
   as being first to do a solo circumnavigation.
