Hydrogen is an element. Deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen,
specifically hydrogen-2. Just like carbon-14 is an isotope of carbon.

An element is defined by its atomic number, which is the number of
protons. An isotope is defined by the number of protons and the mass
number, and is thus more specific than an element.
