I've never used a "real" iPod, but on my nano, the idea is that
everything is kept on your computer's hard drive and is temporarily
loaded to the iPod. So it's the laptop that you need to back up. I'm
   backed up, but not offsite.

My SO's new touch can talk to the host computer, or directly to my
wifi. We bought an app, but coudln't figure out how to load it from
the computer to the iPod. A friend suggested re-buying the mini-app
from Apple, and apple recognized that I already owned the app when I
tried to re-buy it via the wifi. It downloaded directly to the unit
   for free.

If the unit blew up, I assume that I could re-load the purchased
stuff. I'm not sure how many cycles of that before apple gets
   suspicious.
