   I can see some logic behind it.  I don't know, but I've heard it's better as   
   it minimizes wear and tear on the batteries to bypass it completely, or at   
   least let them charge till full while still running the device off the   
   external power.  Don't know how much of a difference it would actually make   
   for that more expensive to build power system cost vs. the slight additional   
   overall life to make it worth it though.
