There are two different iPhone models (16GB and 32GB) and, if AT&T are
anything like Vodafone here in New Zealand, there are multiple confusing
"Plan" types you can choose from.

Basically, like most mobile phone companies, if you pay more per month then
the price of the phone itself comes down, pay enough per month and the phone
is free, choose to use pre-pay (here in New Zealand) and you pay full price
for the phone ... in fact if you buy the iPhone outright you can choose to
use it with either official Vodafone or unofficial Telecom NZ (who are
offering quite large credit incentives if you swap over).
