Well, more exactly, when Roddenberry was having the big spat
over Who Shall Control Star Trek, back when Next Generation was getting
started, and Filmation's bankruptcy was throwing all of its properties
into ownership limbo, licensing agreements began warning to Not Use Any
   Animated Series references.

This is sensible from a legal point of view, in that if it isn't
clear just who owns the animated version of Larry Niven's Kzin it's
probably best not to touch anything. It's also sensible from the
Roddenberry-snit-with-DC Fontana-and-David Gerrold angle, since they had
a *lot* to do with the animated series and Next Generation and were
slugging things out for control and money back then. Note that the
``don't touch'' memos came out about as Gerrold was bringing his complaint
about credit for the Next Generation Bible for arbitration; downplaying
all his contributions to Trek's state of being would be advantageous for
   Roddenberry.

Building it into an issue of 'canon' is a pretty silly thing, as
later Trek TV writers slipped in references to the Animated Series at just
about the same rate they slipped in referenecs to any of the older shows.

Plus, you know, put the animated show up against the first season
or two of any of the Modern Trek shows and the cartoon comes out ahead.
Granted that's not strong competition, but, man, if ``A Night In Sickbay''
counts as Official Trek Canon then by what right do we keep ``Albatross'
out? And however bad an episode of the Animated Series might be, you know
at least three from every other Trek show that are much more embarrassing.
