   The way such thing usually happen, is that the planet's environment   
   undergoes massive change. To take an example, there a lot of examples   
   of giant reptiles and bugs that would die if you brought them to the   
   present because we don't have enough oxygen in our air to support   
   them. What would have used up all the native salt though is anyone's   
   guess.
