   my point was that if perpetual copyright had existed from the beginning   
   of time then Disney would not have been able to create "The Little   
   Mermaid" and dozens of other works and thus society would be poorer.   
   Since Disney was able to do so they are, IMHO, ethically obligated to   
   allow others to build on their work after some suitable time.  I see an   
   ethical shade of grey when someone can use someone else's work to create   
   art but others can't use theirs.  It appears to me that you  and Jim   
   argue that what you create is absolutely controlled by you but see no   
   problem with using things that others might not have wanted you to use   
   if they or their heirs had been in a position to do something about it.
