   Wasn't it?  How could they have the legends of a people they'd never   
   successfully communicated with in their databanks?  Why couldn't the   
   universal translator figure out the meaning of the allusions when it   
   could figure out the meaning of totally alien languages via some kind   
   of cybernetic telepathy?
