   It doesn't have to have evolved as a _giant_ amoeba in space.  It   
   could have evolved as a regular-sized one and just decided that that   
   whole "mitosis and cytokinesis" reproduction thing just wasn't for   
   it and by gosh it was going to stay in one piece no matter _how_ big   
   it got.
