   | "Shore Leave" from The Original Series was another "Not their
   | Holodeck" episode, which sort of predated the TNG era holodeck. Pretty
   | good show that. I found "The Royale" to be OK, esp. as I believe it
   | was an early one.

The problem I have with The Royale is that they were so intent on
having a clever solution to the contrived problem that they didn't
bother to try the obvious things. For example, they thought they
could cut through the shield with phasers and beam up the landing
party with the downside that the planet's atmosphere would rush in
and freeze them in the process. (In theory they could be revived.)
Well, the revolving door seems to let things _in_. Why not bring
in some environment suits or some sort of portable shield generator?
