   I was reading about "Day of the Five Doctors" (may have the title wrong!)   
   and it said that it was originally shot, or was intended to be shot, as a   
   regular 4-episode serial as well as a 90-minute single episode -- meaning   
   that ~30 minutes would be cut -- so it sounds like the BBC has been   
   thinking/doing this for a while now.
