Technically Marco Polo did start the journey to China by ship as well,
but only to get across the Mediterraean.

"The first leg of his journey was aboard a sailing ship, which
took him across the Mediterranean to the city of Acre, on the
coast of what is today Israel. From there Polo and his uncles
followed the Silk Road on camels."

"Marco Polo took an overland route to China from the Middle East
through Central Asia. His return home utilized was by ship from
China to Persia and back to Venice."

As usual, there are some theories that say Marco Polo never actually
   went to China at all.

According to that BBC.com link, Marco Polo never even mentioned tea at
all, let alone cups and saucers. :-)
