   Events rarely have only a single cause. The Soviet Union wouldn't have   
   fallen without the actions of such people. But there are presumably   
   reasons why those people acted that way when they did, and the   
   equivalent people didn't bring down the Soviet union a decade, or two   
   decades, or three decades earlier. Whether James is correct about what   
   those reasons were I don't know.
