That was long before       Afghanistan, long before the Berlin Wall and the socialist governments       fell in Eastern Europe late 80s - in those bloodless "velvet"       revolutions. So the Hungarians in 1956 certainly could not possibly have       been encouraged by a Soviet defeat.
