   It sounds familiar to me. If it's the one I read, then chances are that   
   it appeared in Analog, *probably* 10-20 years ago. In my recollection   
   the whole society was in the cave, and there was some taboo about going   
   outside -- maybe he went in the night and sunlight was extra dangerous?
