   Helen specified 'back in the time when smoking was the   
   norm', so A might well have disputed both of your   
   assertions: in his view not smoking was going to drive him   
   frantic, and smoking wasn't actually going to harm B.   
   (Remember, B's complaint was that he disliked the smell, not   
   that he was asthmatic or what have you.)  I'm with Gray on   
   this one.  (And I've been on both sides of the smoking   
   divide: I was a fairly heavy pipe smoker for about 15 years,   
   then quit cold about 25 years ago.)
