   I've come to the conclusion (and if I have, I suppose other more   
   knowledgeable people have thought of it before me) that things like   
   religion and cultural practices that might have no apparent survival   
   value actually ensure that the father stays around. If you just want   
   lots of offspring, you get the female pregnant and move on, hoping that   
   she raises it and it isn't killed by another male, but if you want your   
   child to believe the same things you believe and worship the gods you   
   worship, then you have to stick around to make sure it happens.
