   We tried to get my mother to give up the car and use taxis (cheaper,   
   as you say, for someone with few trips) after she was no longer   
   competent to drive, but she refused.  Eventually my sister removed the   
   battery and drove my mother to various destinations (church, weekly   
   bridge club, shopping) while the car was waiting to be fixed "real   
   soon now."
