My sister and brother-in-law live in the woods near where there was an
enormous forest fire in 2002. They had to evacuate twice as a
precaution. He left a garden sprinkler on the roof to keep the roof
wet against any flying burning branches, but the expected fire path
would have crossed the power lines to their house a few miles down the
   hill.

So he bought a generator to run the pumphouse the next time this might
happen. After a couple of years, they bought a large travel trailer,
and the generator now lives under one of the bench seats.

They generally only use the trailer places where there are plug-ins,
but it's the thought that counts. The generator has to live
   SOMEWHERE.

Gas motors and the matching generators (unless you're reusing the
existing electric motor as a generator) are heavy.

Car companies are trying to fill this niche with "plug-in hybrids"
where the generator and recharge engine are non-removable.
