Sure, not all of them do, but if I am remembering which ipad
   he has correctly, his does.

Both of my last two phones have excellent GPS,
one much better than the other, and better than
both of the dedicated GPSs too.

   Yeah, me too.

I don't bother with crappy phones.

It can't be that because the iphone 5 has a much better GPS
than either of my dedicated GPSs which wont fit in a shirt
pocket or any pocket at all with the TomTom 710.

Mine works fine without one. You just have to follow
the route that it setup using wifi, or at least return to
it if you leave it and can't setup a new on without it.

   > I use a wifi hotspot rather than buying a data plan,

I do both and leave the cellular data turned off
most of the time. Costs peanuts to use the GPS
   using cellular data tho.

   > and it's a pain to provide data to it
   > when I want to use the phone as a GPS.

I just turn the cellular data on for that.
   Costs peanuts.

   > Especially when none of the household GPS units
   > will fit into the phone pocket on the motor scooter.

I don't bother with mine now, just use the phone all the time.

Much more convenient being able to tap on an address
in an email and have it offer to route you there.
