Trains are a good alternative for some routes in Germany. Germany,
being a fairly densly popoulated country, has a reasonably dense
   rail network.

The ICE 3 trains between Cologne and Frankfurt airport are quite
fast, up to 300 km/h (185 mph). They run parallel to the Autobahn,
and you cannot hope to pass them in a car, even if there is
   no traffic jam :-)

Cologne to Stuttgart is around 360 km (220 miles). The train
takes a bit more than two hours (even if there a change of trains
in between). This is really hard to beat by car if your connections
to the respective train stations are reasonable. Also, you get Wifi
on the train, and you can get some coffee while moving.

Of coourse, if you are going anywhere where only regional
trains go, going by car is usually faster.
