   So I was watching the Pendragon War of the Worlds and I came back to an old   
   question, why did Wells kill the Martians off with a literal deus ex machina of   
   bacteria? I have had looked him up in Wikipedia where it reports he did have a   
   religion. So he could have included that ending as an expression of his   
   religion.   
      
   But I also think that as a socialist he would like the idea that after the high   
   and mighty, the army and navy, had all failed, it was the anonymous mass of   
   workers that would rise up and overthrow their oppressors. And keeping with the   
   as England had done to Africa and Asia so Mars would do to England theme of the
