   This subthread (with its references to other writers as well as   
   Clancy) reminds me of Donald E. Westlake's novel /The Hook/, which is   
   about a famous writer who agrees to something of this sort if the   
   prospective ghostwriter will kill his wife for him.    
      
   Note that Westlake books labeled as "A Novel" are /not/ humorous. At   
   all.
