   The first serial publication made ERB $750, almost double his pay for "A   
   Princess of Mars".  That was about a cent a word which as late as 1940,   
   a generation later, was still considered a good word rate for SF or fantasy.   
      
   Three years later Argosy was paying him two and a half cents per word -   
   recall that Analog, F&SF and Galaxy were paying only three cents a word   
   in the late 1960s.  They really wanted his stuff.   
      
   The only other author Argosy paid as well was the pre-Wolfe Rex Stout. I   
   should really look for a collection of his early work.
