   It was named after the California that Mexico once owned. Before the   
   USA took it over.    
      
   So it has historical associations. As does, of course, "Gulf of   
   Mexico". A lot of the coastline currently part of the USA used to be   
   part of Mexico. Or at least of Spain, of which Mexico was a   
   possession.
