   IIRC from my reading it quite a while back, he presented it more as a   
   demonstration that a heliocentric system would be simpler than   
   Ptolomy. He and others may, of course, have believed it, but that's   
   not the same as presented it as an actual fact.   
      
   And he carefully arranged to have it published /after/ he died,   
   considering it very unlikely that the Holy Office would be able to do   
   anything to him after he was dead.
