Rowley was apparently asked for a sequel but declined. I get the
impression that he felt he'd committed enough first-book mistakes that
the potential series would be very hard to fix. And new ideas
   interested him more.

There does appear to me to be a significant difference in tone between
this and his next few books. While I found GS readable, I prefer the
   latter.

I once saw a summary of his sales figures. His fantasy outsold his SF
   by a factor of ten.
