Things people actually wanted, like classic Sesame Street, didn't need
   the support.

There is something to be said for funding commercially unsuccessful art,
since some of it proves over time to be great. We no longer have a lot
of private art patrons, so it seems natural for government to fill the
gap. On the other hand, the stuff the government funds very seldom
   proves great over time.
