   That might be a harder line than some of your countrymen would draw. I   
   suspect a lot of Americans (and Canadians) would be relatively open to   
   letting people stay if they'd committed no crime beyond entering the   
   country illegally.   
      
   Mind you, I don't know if that's possible. Let's say someone does cross   
   your southern (or northern) border illegally and no one notices. That   
   person wouldn't be eligible to work just by virtue of being physically   
   in the United States would they? They'd have to buy an (illegal) Social   
   Security Number wouldn't they? Or work "underground" for someone that   
   was going to pay them cash (and probably less than the minimum wage).   
   Would they have to commit crimes to rent an apartment or buy a house?
