In Canada debit fees are generally MUCH lower than Visa / MC (for
instance on a $1000 can be $50-60 vs 10-12 cents when an affinity card
   is tendered).

I've been completely apoplectic on VISA's new ad campaign urging
people to use their card on expenditures under $10 as my discount rate
is higher if my average credit card sale is over or under $100 and is
higher yet if it's under $50. One or two transactions doens't affect
the average much but if I were to suddenly get 10-20 per day like that
it would definitely have an effect to the tune of about another 15-20%
extra in credit card costs. Given I currently pay $2000-2500 per month
for my card processing that's a significant piece of change.
