   Although not medically qualified, I worked for many years in   
   a Medical School, mostly attempting to give people advice   
   about research design and analyis (it was a terrible job,   
   summed up by the phrase "If I did my job properly, that   
   wasn't what they wanted; if I did what they wanted, I   
   wasn't doing my job properly") I developed Type 2   
   diabetes, and my GP at that time (an admirable chap)   
   had got to know me in various other contexts. He used   
   to share my despair at some of the antics so-called   
   medical researchers used to think was acceptable. He used   
   to ask me, when I visited him for periodic reviews, "Well,   
   are there any other matters you've read about in the   
   literature that you'd like me to do for you regarding   
   medication and so on?" If there were, he's listen carefully   
   and we'd discuss the way forward, though he always had   
   to assume responsibility for any medication changes.
