This looks like a plan to waste as little as possible of the doctor's
   limited time
(for a doctor who wants to explain the alternative treatment plans rather
   than
simply selecting the one he judges best) viz. adapting the doctor's choice
of descriptive words to the patient's prior lexicon.

This looks like the personal peculiarity of a vet more enthusiastically
   didactic than his professional colleagues.
