   Somebody on IMDB turned me on to this.  It is a 1957 Soviet movie,   
   starting with a biography of Tsiolkovsky and going on to a fictionalized   
   future.  The cinematography is marvelous, the effects stand up pretty   
   well, the sets and the miniatures are gorgeous, and it makes me wish I   
   spoke Russian.  Some scenes are absolutly hilarious and intentionally   
   so.  Disney tried something similar but I think that this succeeds much
