   It's a movie (and book) made by 1960's drug-addled loonies ... *THAT*   
   is why it's an incomprehensible mess.   
      
   It's also not helped by the first half or more (after the monkeys)   
   being mind-numbing boring (including the "two-hour"* docking sequences   
   to nothing but awful ballet music), so everyone has gone to sleep by   
   that point and wake up at the end not knowing what's going on.
