   Thanks.  Two reviews diametrically opposite, but I'll go with   
   the Variety one!  "Mortal Engines" is, I think, one of the two books   
   that I bought, and really, really, wished I hadn't.  [The other was   
   Greg Benford's 'sequel' to "Against the Fall  of Night".]   
      
   I found the basic conceit totally unswallowable. Massive cities chasing,   
   killing, and eating others?  What an image! How poetic!  How stupid!   
   Beyond all that, I found the story itself unpleasant.  No thanks.   
   Not even for Jackson.   
      
   It's not the Steampunk that I'm against, BTW.  One series I thoroughly   
   enjoyed is Scott Westerfeld's "Leviathan' trilogy.  Eminently filmable.
