Just about every SF story asks us to swallow a MacGuffin or two for the
sake of the plot. The problem with Interstellar was that it kept
stacking the speculative physics higher and higher in the assumption
that the viewer would never bail. It didn't help that the whole thing
had a rather cold tone. Compared with Contact, which was
thought-provoking *and* entertaining, Interstellar came off as
   pretentious water-cooler bait.
